Checked your gutters lately? Five problems to look for…

A rainy day is the perfect time to check your gutters, but what should you be looking out for? We have five top problems you should be checking for, and if you can’t fix them yourself, then give us a call!

Saggy gutters

Oh dear, saggy gutters are one step away from falling-down gutters, but are usually quite easily fixed. The sagging often comes from dodgy brackets, or things have warped in the sun. Sometimes the weight of debris will have contributed to the sag, so it’s important to keep the gutters clean.

Moss on the wall or ground

It’s very easy to miss a dripping gutter, but one great give-away is a triangle of green moss on the wall, or on the ground below the leak. Over time, the moss and leaking water will stain the wall, and left too long, could cause damp problems in the building. It might not be a big problem to fix, the gutter might just need a clean, a bit of jiggling, and perhaps a new bracket.

Water slopping

Your horizontal guttering runs into a hopper, where the water is sent to the down pipe and away into the drain. Gutter hoppers can become blocked with anything from desiccated pigeons to errant tennis balls, and it’s important to keep the hoppers free-flowing. You can tell if you have a hopper problem, as the water will be dripping from the junction, or, if it’s raining heavily, slopping out in a wave.

Plant life!

We love gardening, but having buddleia merrily blooming from your gutter is not ideal. Plant life in gutters indicate a build up of sediment, which if left, could cause some serious problems down the line. We recommend cleaning your gutters once a year from a ladder (we’re not fans of the pole mounted gutter vacuums, as you’re not close enough to check the soffit and fascia, nor what’s actually in the gutters).
